What is Strongman?

¿Qué es el strongman?

Strongman is the sport of force par excellence. On other occasions we have already talked about hastle or powerlifting, sports that imply strength, but nothing like what you are going to learn today.

Strongman history

Humble origin "I can move more weight than you"

Force sports have their origin in rural competitions, after all, formerly prove that you were stronger than the rest was one of the few fun between the work crews, whether farmers, farmers, sailors, miners or workers Factory.

Therefore, we should not surprise us that in the competitions of strength, or competitions of Strongman, we must move, raise, displace, drag or launch elements such as wheels, stones, barrels, anvils, or trunks for example.

As you can see, those movements and materials are far from the squats, Cleans or starts, as well as the olympic discs or bars. And it is that one of the biggest differences between the competitions of "Haltero" or "Power" and those of Strongman, is that the tests are not closed.

In Strongman depending on who organizes the event, the tests can differ a lot from one competition to another, which makes the sport much more spectacular.

Although there are mythical and present evidence in almost all competitions, such as the dead weight, the porting of the yoke, cylinder lifting or logs, or the Granjero promenade.

Strongman in our day to day

For a while to this part, no more than 15 years ago, strength sports are becoming important, increasing in followers and practitioners, as well as in the interest of the brands.

The latter, however sad, is very necessary for any sport to prosper, since without external investment it is not easy to organize events or provide media coverage.

And here the Cross Training, just as he did with Powerlifting and Hostterphilia, has done an entrance wedge. Showing athletes that there are more ways to raise weights than they themselves thought. The Cross Training, as a sport that seeks to surprise its athletes, has a “leg” of its programming that is the raising/drag/thrust of foreign objects.

And this is nothing more than the inclusion of movements of the Strongman in classes in boxes around the world. We talked about Atlas Piedras, Transport of Sandbags, the famous Pig-Flips of the Crossfit Games (which becomes turning a very heavy refrigerator), the yoke, the sleds ... the Cross Training nourishes the Strongman and in return it provides a Great visibility.

How are Strongman's athletes?

These authentic Titans stand out for their size, after all it is impossible to move many kilos if you do not have a great musculature, we talk that a professional athlete rounds between 150-180 kilograms of weight.

But not everything is great, these athletes require a great aerobic capacity because continued congestion in their exercises conditions them a lot.

They are machines that devour between five and seven thousand calories daily, that train at an exhaustive intensity and that require large rest doses. In addition, their bodies must be flexible to support torsions that sometimes generate certain surveys.

But above all they are strong, they are people capable of literally dragging airplanes, launching heavy Kettlebells more than 10 meters high or lifting rocks of more than 300 kilos.

Do we try the Strongman?

If you want to start in this sport in many Cross Training box, specific classes are taught, because they are very helpful in WODS. It is common that in these training centers there are Axle bars (bars for Olympic discs with a grip diameter of about 50mm, the usual are 28mm, and without rolled). Yugos, these racks are charged with weight to transport them in suspense on your shoulders from one side to another. Or sandball, balls stuffed with sand of up to 60 kilos.

Once you try it, surely what we said at the beginning of saying ... "I can lift that."
